Today we looked at several other gypsum outcrops. This gypsum was different because it had been transported in large underwater flows called turbidites. In some places large gypsum crystals had grown into beautiful disks and "roses" in the rocks when they were still mud. Then the rocks were buried and heated turning the gypsum into

alabaster.
In one field locality a slow landslide was causin

g the road to crack and slump leaving impressive deformation in a few years time.

Today we were home for lunch as reports are due

tomorrow and we needed some time to get work done.

Hi all, the picture of the road looks like our Alaskan roads built over permafrost. (Yes, this is Mary Beth, John's mom).
I always wondered how alabaster was formed. Now I have some idea of it. John, do you remember the alabaster boxes I have on my dresser - one turquoise and one pink?
In the picture with the pencil, is it showing gypsum or alabaster?
